Nice Day for a Sulk

In a bit of a funk. No, not feeling funky. That would be a good thing. The worst part, I have no real good reason. Hoping that the proper application of therapeutic music will snap me out of it. Any song suggestions?

“Danger! High Voltage!” – Electric Six that always perks me up. that and calling in sick and going for a bike ride and reading in the park.

While burning a CD for my shiny new MP3-enabled car stereo, I stumbled across an MP3 that’s been sitting on my hard drive for a years: “No Controles,” by Cafe Tacuba. If I remember right, Joe and I were driving around the backwoods of Texas in a big white van when we heard an NPR special about this crazy band called Cafe Tacuba. (That was you, wasn’t it, Joe?) If that song won’t pick you up, nothing will. “No controles mis vestidos! No controles mis sentidos!”

Andrew, I having been trying to find an mp3 of that song, but it is taking forever to download.

Quinn, just listened to it. Excellent choice. It also reminds me of the first night Adrienne and I hung out, which by the way was at your house. This song was blasting over and over.

Quinn, that was me. I just listen to that song all the time, it’s on my commuting mix. Josh, try not to listen to anything by Arab Strap. How about Hepcat, listen to the whole “scientific” album. The other school of thought would be to drive the funk out with angry, aggressive music. Jawbreaker? Rancid? My best advice is to chanel your mood into creative pursuits.

I dare you to listen to Jaan Pehechaan Ho by Mohamed Raffi without forgetting your.

  6. joe says:

funk. That was the end of that sentance.

I always dig some up beat Eddie Money– Take me home tonight, or a little Operation Ivy might do the job. I am still waiting for the two to make a compilation album. Jethro. Has anyone ever thought “Amishcowboy.com” would be a great name?

I feel better now that Joe has committed a comment error. Anyway, as for songs . . . try Black Metallic by Catherine Wheel, To Fade In by Adorable, and Leave it All Behind by Ride. If that doesn’t make you feel cool and sophisticated then try some Nick Drake – Pink Moon.

  9. josh says:

Jaan pehechaan ho was like magic!

  10. Chels says:

Nick Drake is fabulous!! As for me– when I’m feelin’ in a funk, I always just look me up some Cake and laugh like a maniac. Cake will only do for some occasions, and funkiness is definitely one of them.

  11. joe says:

glad to hear Jaan Pehechaan Ho worked. I had no doubt that it would.

This is too late but I higly recommend “Black Capricorn Day” by Jamiroquai’s “Synchronized” album. Also from the same artist: “Deeper Underground” from the Godzilla soundtrack.

  13. Jory says:

Múm’s “Finally We are No One”, especially tracks 2 and 3, Jack Johnson (should you choose to jump on that bandwagon) “Brush Fire Fairytales,” Smashing Pumpkins “Adore.” None of these are happy perky albums, but rather what i like to call “blank slate” albums, good for clearing your head and sorting out your feeligs — good zone out albums. They are warm and comforting, but ultimately leave you in control.

Remember, Josh, no one has the right to tell you what to do or think, or how to feel, and no one has the right to touch you in your bathing suit area.

Well – knowing you better I am able to target music that is exactly for you — your own personalized amazon recommends-type suggestions without leaving your office:

The Josh-Defunkified Mix: Whitney Houston (ok, I don’t know what she sings, but I’m sure that any of it will get you out of a funk, make you fling your headphones across the office, and cause merriment for all) Van Halen – Jump It will remind you of volleyball and you will attempt to jump then you will start thinkingn of “Jump around” and your knees will begin to hurt and you will forget about your funk Musical Youth – Pass the Dutchie…. You are a sucker for a catching tune and a reggie-like beat. Don’t go directly to Bob Marley, this is your cup of tea Finally, if for some reason all the above fail…. Anything from John Tesh — I guarantee you will feel completely different from how you do now. And yes, I will visit you in the State Pen after you are convicted, after all it’s not your fault Tesh effects you like he does.

  16. shawn says:

On Tesh–Does that include the old Bumper Music for the NBA Finals?

  17. dave says:

The problem with John Tesh is that he forces me into an emotional funk cycle. For example, I start out feeling like everythings going to be okay, but then I begin to feel sad. My sadness then leads me to VIOLENCE and ANGER! But then I realize that the anger only hurts myself, so then I’m pleasantly contented, however the emotional juices then continue spiralling downward, and I think that everything is going to be alright again. There is no escaping this. I thus recommend starlight mints for funk shaking. Submarine is good, Popsicle is close, but brass digger is like one of those perfect songs. That and Dance Commander by Electric Six. (Danger High Voltage has been used and I’ve listened to it too many times.) I believe that Amish Cowboy is a truly great name.

  18. dave says:

Also, the theme song to Sanford and Son. This not only pulls away the funk, it also gets your feet wigglin like James Brown. The theme song to Fat Albert as well (while I’m at it) because it is one of the greatest creations of all time. The best part about Fat Albert is that it is based on a true story.

Do you mean that there really is an instrument made from an old radiator?!! Now that is talent!!

  20. dave says:

I just saw American Splendour, a movie sure to shake the poopie funk from any man.

  21. josh says:

I think I may have to summarize this list of funk cures and post them for the benefit of the funky (funkee?).

  23. duane says:

jp: i’d take advantage of the funk and ride it deep let your self free fall into it for a good 24 hours maybe ease your way in with some leonard cohen not the new nonsense he’s created but something like that one where he’s musing about an evening in the chelsea hotel with j joplin then fall further with some lou reed sans velvet underground his dreaming off songs for drella and then perfect day off of another later album of which i won’t remeber the name with out much struggle resort to getting little accomplished don’t annunciate when speaking and use as few words as possible avoid the sun sit drive your car to an empty parking lot find a place behind a dumpster and then listen to bonnie prince billy i see a darkness no better yet listen to the version of it he did with johnny cash and i dare you to close your eyes you won’t because your still young and scared and thats what i’d suggest. 111’s and 000’s duane

I’m just surprised no one has thought about “Moon Light In Vermont.” No, wait, I’ve been in a funk ever since I heard it in 1950. sorry. don’t go there. Forget it.

  26. Frank says:
