The amount of people dressed up in college is probably about 20% of the school’s population, but those dressed up were giving 200% effort. Either way, I went straight home after classes and made it just in time to eat some classic mummy dogs. Then, Henry’s friends never showed up to take him trick-or-treating (there was a miscommunication) and so I took him instead. He can fret about how little trick-or-treating he was able to do, but the fact that his bag literally broke under the weight of his candy (including a family-size bag of gummy bears) says otherwise.
Then, after he went to bed, we watched A Haunting in Venice. I was so proud of myself for being able to guess the murder before it happened. (No spoilers.) But it was the perfect amount of spooky for the night.
Even though she didn’t want to—and who could blame her, it was 11:30 at night—mom graciously took me back to the dorm. She does that kind of thing a lot. She operates under a rule of constant and total service. I could describe her in a lot of ways, but mom generally falls under the description of: “If Christmas were a person.” A dripping-with-candles and Switzerland-in-the-olden-days kind of Christmas, too. It’s even more important to note that she works to be that way. It’s definitely her natural inclination, but her acts of kindness and joyful celebration of others are always a deliberate choice. That makes them mean more than if it were just instinct, if you ask me.
Anyway. A successful Halloween for the books! My favorite holiday, which I will continue to celebrate until Thanksgiving and will start up again after the actual Christmas.
For now, I’ll go to bed.
