Today, as I walked out in the dreary rain, I thought to myself: you know, my bed is like four feet off the ground, and I have a lot of space under there. Maybe I should make a nest. So, I did.
The space directly underneath my mattress, against the wall and partially hidden by my small bedside drawers, was perfect. So I shoved every pillow and blanket I had into the space, crawled inside, and promptly realized that burrowing animals are the most correct animals out there.
It was SO COZY. Some part of my monkey brain felt satisfied that I had found a secluded, warm cave. Some part of my modern brain felt that this was something new and whimsical, and therefore it approved.
I spent several hours in there, writing a two-page essay, dinking around on my phone, and watching a murder mystery game stream. Some time after that, I zonked out and fell asleep.
That was when I learned the one downside of the nest: I blearily wandered out from it some time after I woke up, and my roommate Izzy saw me in the living room.
“Oh, when did you get back?”
There was a beat, and then I had to explain that no, I actually didn’t go home for the weekend (my family members are all currently playing hot potato with COVID), but instead crawled under my bed and zonked out for like half the day, because it was dark, warm, and cozy.
I inspired my room-roommate, Tavia, to build one as well.
Did I find a new untapped source for future back problems? Sure. But did I also create a cozy, magical place to hang out during my downtime? Absolutely. No regrets!

I ended up making a little doodle of it for fun.
