This might be my favorite poem I’ve ever written. I don’t know what magic was in the air on the New Year of 2022, but I sure do love what it made me write.
I walked through the sands of time
Past memories, ankle-deep
I swept away unwanted grime
And picked what I wished to keep.
My pockets full of grainy gold,
I continued on my quest
And though my self is hard to hold
I truly did my best.
I stopped and dried my feet
After the puddles of regret
The liquid tempts, and seems so sweet
But it is much kinder to forget.
I gazed at the nostalgic moon
With its honeyed hazy glow
And finally crossed the final dune
With footsteps soft and slow.
“Here I am,” I said,
To the New Year standing there.
“I lived and breathed and did my best,
And that is only fair.”
The New Year nodded, and held my hand.
She sighed and counted down from ten.
“What a lovely time it seems you’ve had..
..now go, and do it all again.”
